The death toll of last night's mall shooting in Washington state is now up to five.

Authorities say a man carrying a rifle entered a Macy's department store in a mall north of Seattle and killed four women and critically injured one man, who later died of his injuries.

The shooting occurred at about 7pm last night at the Cascade Mall in Burlington, about 70 miles north of Seattle.

The lone gunman fled from the mall on foot before police arrived, and is still at large.

A state patrol spokesman says the killer's motive and his connection to the victims are unclear.

Authorities are actively searching for the shooter.  (Metro News Networks)
