A Dartmouth man is facing charges after New Bedford Police say he was caught breaking into a fishing vessel Wednesday night.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says officers were sent to Fish Island near the New Bedford Fairhaven bridge at around 9:45 p.m. after the owner of the boat, named “Miss Shauna”, observed the break-in.

The owner then chased the fleeing suspect before cornering him at a nearby gas station where the stolen items, which consisted of some tools and personal property, were retrieved.

Vicente says the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Robert Bariteau, was recognized by the owner as someone who had worked for him in the past.

Officers arrived and arrested Bariteau who was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday morning in New Bedford District Court on Breaking and Entering charges.
