Local fishermen could get some reimbursement for future at-sea monitor costs.

The Northeast Fisheries Science Center announced the initiative on Thursday.

The current proposal would provide grant money to the Atlantic States Fisheries Commission who would then disperse the funds to various fishing sectors.

The reimbursements would only apply to trips that took place after July 1 of this year.

Officials say these funds aren't likely to last through the entire fishing season and the process for fishermen receiving these reimbursements is still being worked out.

The NEFSC says they were able to fully fund their monitoring program this year and will use the remaining funds to offset some costs for the groundfish at-sea monitoring program.
