New Bedford Fire crews were called to the scene of a Tuesday afternoon fire at 187 Crapo St.

Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News the attic fire at the 2 1/2 story home was reported at around 3 p.m.

The fire took place as temperatures hovered 90 degrees and Gomes says two firefighters became overwhelmed by the heat.

"We had two firefighters that were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion," said Gomes "we had high heat and high humidity conditions which were problematic for the crews in order to be able to fight the fire itself, but the crews did a great outstanding job in dealing with that situation."

None of the residents were injured but Gomes says those living on the second and third floor were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.

Damage is estimated at roughly $65,000 and the cause of the fire appears to be electrical in nature.
