New Bedford, like many old New England towns, has homes and other buildings with pitched or slanted roofs.

As concern about roof collapses increases New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes says this type of roof is designed to deal with heavy snow fall and avoid collapse.

However, gomes tells WBSM's Phil Paleologos that some of the newer buildings, which feature a flatter roof design, don't fair as well.

Gomes also says those concerned about roof collapse, should look for certain signs.

He also advised listening for popping sounds as they are often signs that fasteners are failing.
