New Bedford's Zeiterion Theater is looking to the city for help. The City Council's Ordinance Committee heard from "Z" partners Tuesday, who are looking to bring in an outside entity to manage the maintenance of the city-owned theater. The "Z" had relied on state funding and private donors to fund the building's upkeep in past years, but is running a deficit of over $330-thousand dollars this year trying to maintain the aging structure. Zeiterion Board president Larry Hunt says the focus on building maintenance has drained funding for productions and staff.

The "Z" is currently in negotiations with Mayor Mitchell's administration over a long-term building maintenance contract. The Council's Ordinance Committee is requesting 150-thousand dollars to help the theater continue productions and maintenance through the end of the fiscal year.
