The future of the Downtown New Bedford Post Office is still uncertain after last night's public hearing.

During the Appointments & Breifings meeting, the United States Postal Service informed the public and city councilors about their proposals for the historic building.

Council members and the public all spoke in opposition to relocate the post office.

Former mayor Scott Lang says the building is a key part of downtown and needs to be preserved...

Postal officials say if the Pleasent St. building is closed, a smaller retail office would be put in a new location downtown and all delivery operations would move to the Mt. Pleasent St. location.

The Postal Service says no changes are expected for at least a year and a half.

The City Council went on record last night, unannimously opposed to the closure or relocation of the city's main post office.
