FALL RIVER — Fall River Police are investigating how one of their officers was exposed to carbon monoxide in his cruiser to the point where he required hospitalization.

WJAR-TV reports the officer was hospitalized on September 6 after becoming sick while driving his 2015 Ford Explorer cruiser. The carbon monoxide detector in the vehicle did not go off.

Police are also looking into whether required repairs were made to the cruiser.

It's not the first case of CO poisoning in a police vehicle, as departments across the country have taken action over concerns that fumes from the Ford Explorer patrol vehicles are leaking inside the cruisers.

Ford Motor Company says the departments may have accidentally caused the problem while installing after-market equipment. However, Ford has promised to repair the vehicles at no cost.

Ford will contact the Fall River Police Department to investigate the incident.
