Fall River Mayor Comments on Recall Effort

FALL RIVER — Mayor Jasiel Correia has released a statement regarding the recall effort that is underway in the city.

According to the social media statement sent by Correia's special assistant, he will run for the office if there is a recall election. The statement was published by The Herald News.

“I am grateful to the citizens of Fall River who have stood by me and continue to support me. I am touched by your words of kindness and encouragement and I intend to continue doing what I was elected to do - work hard each day to make Fall River a better and safer city. I support any citizens’ right to petition under the rules of the charter. In the event a recall petition does gain the necessary signatures, I ask that the citizens re-elect me so that our progress can continue. I ask that the people of Fall River show their support by not signing the recall petition. Thank you and God Bless.”

The group behind the recall has until November 19 to collect over 2,500 signatures of registered voters in Fall River. If successful, it would give the mayor the option of resigning or facing a recall election.

Correia was arrested and arraigned in federal court on 13 charges of wire and tax fraud.
