A Fall River man is under arrest after going hand-to-hand with Westport Police.

According to Westport Police, officers observed a green Chevy Lumina being driven erratically on Route 88 South around 1:30pm Tuesday. Officers gave chase but soon backed off due to public safety concerns.

The Chevy continued to drive at high speeds, ultimately rear-ending one vehicle and then careening into a guardrail half-a-mile later.

Police arrived on the scene and confronted the driver, 45-year-old Paul Correia of Fall River, who resisted arrest and began fighting with officers and striking them. Officers subdued Correia with a taser, and arrested him.

Correia has been arraigned on charges of resisting arrest, four counts of assault and battery on a police officer, and numerous traffic violations. Correia was ordered held on $1,000 bail.
