A Fall River man already being held on a murder charge was sentenced to 8-to-10 years in state prison for violating an earlier probation.

Then-16-year old Kevin Lara was given a five year probation sentence in 2012 in connection with a youthful offender case.

But authorities claim Lara violated that probation, when he and another man allegedly shot and killed Anthony Carvalho of Fall River.

Following a series of hearings over the past three months, Juvenile Court Judge John Spinale ruled that Lara had violated his probation by possessing an illegal handgun and associating with the second suspect, Tavon Pires.

The judge sentenced Lara to 8-to-10-years in prison. Lara and Pires are still awaiting trial on the murder charge.
