FALL RIVER — A Fall River man has perished in a fire in the city.

The fire was reported at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday at 299 Montaup Street. Firefighters could see smoke coming out of the second floor of the multi-family home upon their arrival.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office says Carl DaPonte II, 61, of Fall River, was found unresponsive in his second-floor apartment by firefighters. He was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The fire was contained to DaPonte's apartment.

No other injuries were reported.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office says the cause of the fire appears to be accidental but remains under investigation.
