The newest bishop of the Fall River Diocese was formally placed into power through the Rite of Installation Wednesday afternoon.

The Most Reverend Edward da Cunha became the eighth bishop of the Diocese during a ceremonial mass at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fall River.

The ceremony was attended hundreds including priests, fellow bishops, and congregants.

During his homily, da Cunha assured all those in attendance he will do all he can to serve the Diocese.

Da Cunha was welcomed by Cardinal Sean O'Malley, retiring Bishop George Coleman, and representative of Pope Francis Archbishop Carlo Vigano.

Da Cunha took possession of the Diocese when he was escorted to his cathedra - or, chair, at the alter.

The ceremony was followed by a mass and then a meet and greet reception.
