New Police Officer Matthew Sobral is joining his father on the Fairhaven Police Department.

Sobral was one of four new officers taking the oath Tuesday at Town Hall. "It's something I idolized growing up, something I always wanted to do and the opportunity finally presented itself and I took full advantage of it," he said, adding, "its where I've always wanted to be."

His dad, Sgt. David Sobral tells WBSM News, he didn't encourage his son to enter law enforcement. Sobral says he left the decision up to him. "I'm very proud and happy for this day, said Sgt. Sobral, adding "Matthew a forceful individual with leadership capabilities, and I think he'll do very well."

Sgt. Sobral added, he thinks all four new officers will do very well. Matthew Sobral, Jonathon Alves, Scott Coelho and Jerome Penha Jr. have completed 22 weeks of training at the Plymouth Police Acadamy, and will undergo two more weeks of training in Fairhaven before being assigned regular shifts.
