Fairhaven officials are hoping to join other local communities like New Bedford and Wareham in banning the sale of synthetic drugs.

Also known as "fake weed", K-2, and spice, synthetic drugs are currently legal to sell in Fairhaven.

Fairhaven's Board of Health met with the Board of Selectmen on Monday night to discuss Wednesday's public hearing to potentially institute the ban.

During the meeting, Selectman Dan Freitas suggested increasing first offense fines for selling the product from $100 to $500. Freitas says the penalties for selling synthetic drugs need to be tough.

"I think if you want to grab someone's attention, you make it hurt the first time, not give them the opportunity to make a mistake twice. I'm a firm believer in that," Freitas told WBSM News.

After the first offense, officials discussed an increased fine along with potential license suspension.

Board of Health Vice-Chairman Jeannine Lopes said middle schoolers are among the most at-risk for using synthetic drugs because of the colorful packaging along with it's easy availability.

The Board of Health's public hearing on the ban will start at 6:30pm at Fairhaven's Town Hall.
