Fairhaven firefighters responded to an oil spill early Sunday in the New Bedford-Fairhaven Harbor, near the Coast Guard Auxillary Marina.

Public Information Officer Wayne Oliveira tells WBSM News when firefighters arrived on scene they found a large amount of oil in the water, and that the spill had extended to the Marina at the Seaport Inn.

Three-hundred-fifty feet of containment boom was placed in the water, and Frank Corp, a private contractor was called in to complete the cleanup.

The Coast Guard, and the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection were notified.

Oliveira says samples of bilge oil were taken from fishing boats in the area to possibly determine the source of the spill and find the responsible party. The incident remains under investigation.
