Fairhaven school administrators are working to console students at the high school after the tragic loss of a fellow classmate.

18-year-old Meghan Sargent, a graduating senior at Fairhaven High, was killed after the car she was in, driven by 21-year-old Brooklyn Rodrigues, crashed on Route 6 in Mattapoisett Monday night. Rodrigues, a former student at the high school, was also killed.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Baldwin says Sargent was an outstanding student. "Meghan Sargent was graduating as an honors student, (and) was the leader of the band. Just yesterday morning, Meghan Sargent was leading the band in our traditional Memorial Day Parade."

Fairhaven High School Principal Tara Kohler says the school is working with the Sargent family to determine the best way to present them with Meghan's diploma.

Grief counselors are on hand all week for students affected by the tragedy.
