An afternoon house fire has displaced two families in Fairhaven.

The fire began around 2pm Thursday in a two-family, single-story home at 451 Sconticut Neck Road.

Tenant Jerome Wedge tells WBSM News he was watching television when he heard a crackling noise. "I thought my neighbor was doing a little bit of a construction type-thing, so I looked out the window and the whole back deck and house was engulfed with flames. The whole thing was already burning right near her head," said Wedge.

Everyone at home at the time was able to escape without injury.

The home sustained significant damage to the rear of one of the apartments. The second apartment was damaged by smoke.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
