The Albert Gomes Elementary School in New Bedford has received a $267,000 grant to extend the school day, starting in September.

Its the first Expanded Learning Time grant ever awarded to a New Bedford Public School.

The grant money will provide more learning time for students, along with additional professional development and planning time for teachers.

Additional time on teaching and learning at the Gomes School will give both teachers and students the tools they need to be successful," said Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin.

The change will add eight more days to the school year at Gomes and alter school hours to 7:55am through 3:30pm, Monday through Friday.

Teachers had approved the change in April.
