Environmental Groups Push For “Reopener” Clause In AVX Settlement

The Buzzards Bay Coalition and Hands Across The Tiver are making a final push to secure signatures on a petition, seeking a “reopener” clause in the recently announced settlement to clean New Bedford Harbor. The settlement calls for A-V-X to pay $366 million to finish the dredging and removal of PCB’s from the harbor. But the Coalition’s Mark Rasmussen questions whether the $366 million is enough to finish the job…..

The petition is asking the U.S. Justice Department to insert a “reopener” clause in the final agreement saying the government can go back to A-V-X, if more money is needed. The deadline is Monday. So far, more than 1,600 people have signed the petition. You can sign by logging on to savebuzzardsbay.org or visiting the Coalition’s office on Front Street.
