Whitman police are looking for the vandals who knocked over and damaged 67 headstones at a cemetery in town, including one belonging to the family of a World War II Medal of Honor winner.

Chief Scott Benton said the damage at the Colebrook Cemetery likely occurred Saturday night.

The vandalism was discovered Sunday morning by someone who went to visit a gravesite.

Benton called the damage ``infuriating.''

Benton says some of the gravestones are more than 150 years old and irreplaceable. Damage was estimated in the thousands of dollars.

Among the damaged gravestones is that of the family of Army 1st Lt. John R. Fox, who posthumously received the Medal of Honor in 1997 for his actions during World War II.
