Downtown New Bedford will once again undergo targeted ground spraying by the Bristol County Mosquito Control Project.

The New Bedford Board of Health announced Tuesday the ground spraying will take place in the area of Union and Purchase Streets as well as City Pier 3 between 2am and sunrise Thursday morning.

The spraying is being conducted to reduce the threat of mosquito-borne illnesses in advance of a number of planned events for this weekend, including Joe Jesus' 50s Night Thursday, an upcoming shark tournament, jazz in the park at Custom House Square, and the summer concert series on State Pier.

Residnets in the vicinity of the targeted areas may wish to close their windows Wednesday night prior to the spraying.
