Investigators are trying to figure out how a stray dog caught in Westport last week ended up with gunshot wounds to its leg.

Westport Animal Control Officer Donna Lambert says she had been hearing reports about the dog for a couple of weeks before she finally caught the young pit bull last Thursday.

The dog, named Liam, was treated for his gunshot wounds and other injuries, which included a fractured leg, and is now recovering at a Rhode Island shelter. Lambert says if the recovery does not go well, the dog's leg may have to be amputated.

Lambert adds that investigators do not know where Liam came from and there have been no reports of missing dogs matching his description.
