DIGHTON - Law enforcement officials are investigating a shooting in the small town of Dighton.

The Dighton Police Department was en route to 2245 Wheeler Street at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a male trying to gain entry into the home of a family member.

The male suspect had reportedly crashed his car into the vehicles in the driveway and had shattered the rear glass sliding door. That's when the caller's husband shot the male in the abdomen.

Police found the suspect, Ronald Whitmore, Jr., 46, of Bristol, New Hampshire, in the backyard pool. Whitmore was placed into custody and transported to Rhode Island Hospital for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Whitmore is the estranged brother of the female resident of the Wheeler Street address.

Whitmore will be charged with operating to endanger, breaking and entering during the daytime for a felony, home invasion, and assault with a deadly weapon; to wit cobblestone. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Taunton District Court Thursday morning.

No charges are being filed against the homeowner at this time.
