The state's new Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is being dedicated this weekend.

Gen. Joseph Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at Sunday's event At Bicentennial Park in Fall River.

The memorial is a tribute to the families who have lost loved ones in the military service of the country. The six-foot-tall polished granite memorial features four panels depicting homeland, family, patriotism and sacrifice. A section of the stone is cut out in the shape of a saluting soldier.

Bruce Aldrich of the local Marine Corps League detachment was instrumental in bringing the project together. He says about 90 percent of the site work materials and labor was donated.

The dedication ceremony starts at 1pm in Bicentennial Park at 1082 Davoll Street.
