Westport Police are asking for the public's help following the discovery of a decapitated alligator.

Detective Sergeant Antonio Cestodio said that on March 18 they received a report around 9 a.m. from a passerby who said they saw an alligator stuck in some trees near Briggs Rd. and Christopher Cir.

Officers arrived on scene with Animal Control Officer Donna Lambert and located a four foot dead alligator with its head removed lying under some briar bushes.

Cestodio says no signs of decay were detected by Officer Lambert and its believed that the animal had been recently placed there.

Officials notified Massachusetts Environmental Police.
