The confirmed death toll in the Philippines from Typhoon Haiyan has taken a major jump. The U.N. says the Philippines’ disaster agency now puts it at 4,460 confirmed dead.

President Obama calls the typhoon a “heartbreaking reminder” of the fragile nature of life.

He says the USS George Washington aircraft carrier is assisting recovery efforts and “more help is on the way.”

The U.N. says some 920,000 people were displaced by the storm and a total of 11.8 million people have been affected by it. (Associated Press)
