After nearly 30 years as the head of the NBA, David Stern is prepared to retire as of 2014. Since 1984, David Stern has turned the NBA into a monster franchise. While popular before his take over, basketball is now very much on the same level as football and baseball, something it hadn't been before Stern's influence.

I'd like to think I did an adequate job. But one of the things I did best was provide a successor. I'm not going anyplace in the next 15 months, but this gives us the opportunity to have a very smooth transition.

- David Stern

The successor that Stern is referring too is Adam Silver, who will take over in 2014 once he steps down. Stern had been grooming Silver has a possible replacement for the last few years.
