Back in 2003, the MLB did tests on players to see just how dirty the league was. The biggest problem was that the results of those tests didn't surface until 2006, and Big Papi's name was on the list.

According to Deadspin, Ortiz remains dumbfounded. He no idea how he failed a test, or what made the test negative. The list from 2003 also includes the name of former Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez and more.

In an interview with WEEI, Ortiz said:

It is something that is still in the dark because nobody ever had the balls to come to me and say, ‘This is what was happening.’ You damaged my image at the time, and it has always stayed like that. No explanation. No nothing.

Ortiz has been pretty adamant that he never used any sort of PEDs in the past, and would pass current drug tests. This is troubling information, since from Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling has recently said members of the Red Sox staff had encouraged him to use PEDs in 2008.

With other Red Sox testing positive for performance enhancers (Manny was suspended for 50 games for failing a test in 2009), is it out of the question to assume that David Ortiz has at least tried it in the past? His 2013 season is pretty remarkable for a guy who's 37-years-old, and coming off of ankle surgery.
