Iconic singer, songwriter, and actor David Bowie is dead.

Word of his death Sunday was posted on the artist's official social media accounts and confirmed by his representative.

Bowie died two days after his 69th birthday and the release of his 25th studio album.

A posting on his Facebook page says he was surrounded by his family when he died after an 18-month battle with cancer.

He's survived by his children, film director Duncan Jones, 15-year-old daughter "Lexi," and his second wife, the former supermodel Iman.

David Bowie released his first hit, "Space Oddity," in the summer of 1969.

Three years later, he recreated himself for the glam rock era as Ziggy Stardust with the hit single "Starman."

Then, in 1975, he re-emerged as David Bowie with his first major U.S. hit, "Fame" and the successful "Young Americans" album.

Bowie's re-inventions of himself and musical innovations continued through the release of "Blackstar," his 25th studio album, which was released on Friday, his 69th birthday.
