One man has been hospitalized after a non-fatal officer involved shooting in Dartmouth Sunday afternoon, according to a release from the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.

According to Bristol County DA's Office spokesperson Gregg Miliote, Dartmouth Police were called to 779 Dartmouth Street at 4pm in response to a domestic violence incident between a mother and her son.

While police were responding, the son, identified as Ryan Kuphal, 23, drove off in his mother's car. He was eventually located a short time later on Bush Street in South Dartmouth.

According to the preliminary investigation, Kuphal charged at responding officers with a knife. Officers deployed a non-lethal taser that was unsuccessful in stopping the suspect.

As Kuphal continued to charge at officers, one officer fired his service weapon and struck the suspect one time.

Kuphal was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where he remains in serious but stable condition.

The incident is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.
