A Dartmouth man is in police custody after stealing an elderly woman's wallet, and using some of the cash to buy a gym membership.

According to New Bedford Detective Captain Steve Vicente, 24-year-old Patrick Maccini lifted the wallet out of the 85-year-old woman's shopping cart in the Dartmouth Street Stop & Shop in the South End.

He fled the scene on foot and was soon found in the nearby Howland Place building. Police arrested Maccini and recovered the woman's wallet and money.

Police say Maccini used the cash to open a gym membership, and then rented out a locker where he hid some of the clothing he wore during the robbery.

Maccini is being arraigned Friday in New Bedford District Court on one count of larceny from a person over 65-years-old.
