New Bedford Police arrested a Dartmouth man with a stolen firearm.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says members of the Gang Unit were in the North End Thursday night investigating a man who they believed had a gun without a license to carry.

The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Luis Pereira, was stopped in his Chevrolet Silverado Truck near Dean Street and Acushnet Avenue around 5:15 p.m.

Detectives then found a Smith and Wesson 9 millimeter handgun wrapped in a sweatshirt in a tool box.

The gun was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.

Vicente says the handgun was reported stolen in a housebreak in Dartmouth last month.

Pereira is was arraigned Friday morning in New Bedford District Court on firearms charges as well as receiving stolen property.
