Crime doesn't usually pay, but wait until you read what they've done in Washington, D.C., where lawmakers, looking for ways to discourage people from becoming repeat offenders, voted unanimously to approve a bill that includes a proposal to pay residents for not committing crimes. In other words, be a good Do Bee and you will be rewarded with taxpayer's cash! This cockamamie idea was imported from California, where advocates say the program has contributed to deep reductions in crime there.

Repeat crime offenders would be directed to participate in behavioral therapy and other programs. If they fulfill those obligations, and stay out of trouble, they would be paid $9,000 taxpayer dollars a year! What's that you say? $9 grand ain't enough? No problem, we'll ask the pols to up the ante next year.

A morning listener called in to say, dollar to-dollar, this idea was actually less expensive than paying for someone to spend a year in jail or a year on welfare! I suppose she's right, but give me a break, folks. Is this what the greatest country in the world has been reduced to?
