A bill awaiting the signature of Governor Deval Patrick could open the door for Massachusetts public schools to make the switch to cyber-space.

The bill would allow the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to open no more than ten commonwealth virtual schools.

New Bedford Ward 6 City Councilor Joe Lopes supports such an idea on a local level. Lopes tells WBSM News virtual classrooms provide advantages that wouldn't otherwise be available.

Lopes points out Florida, Virginia, and Washington have already implemented virtual classrooms with positive feedback.

Lopes is recommending a feasability study of virtual classrooms to the New Bedford School Committee.
