A controlled burn will be taking place Friday morning in the Freetown/Fall River State Forest.

Freetown Fire-Rescue posted a notice on their Facebook page saying Massachusetts DCR Bureau of Forest Fire Control will be conducting a controlled burn in the Slab Bridge Road/Hathaway Road area.

The controlled burn is expected to impact approximately 11 acres of land.

Although the operation isn't being conducted by the Freetown Fire Department fire officials say Fire Chief Gary Silvia has been involved in the planning process and department members have been invited to observe.

Residents are being told not to be alarmed if they see smoke or observe firefighters or apparatus in the area throughout the day.

Officials say that the controlled burns are needed to get rid of dead foliage and slash that may contribute to uncontrolled brush fires while also promoting healthy plant growth.
