The contents of the Mattapoisett Chowder House on Route Six are being sold piece by piece.  The business is currently in receivership because of an $800,000 debt.

An auction Wednesday to sell the entire one-acre site did not bring a legitimate bid. An attempt by auctioneer Paul Scher to sell the liquor license also failed. The auctioneer then began selling the restaurant's equipment, one lot at a time. It included pans, utensils, coffee machines, tables and chairs and much more.

John Mello of the Sail Loft restaurant in South Dartmouth was among the bidders. "It's always tough to see something like this happen, and you get an uncomfortable feeling because you know you could be the next one, someday," said Mello.

He said he was looking for things to stock the shelves with. "Whenever there's a deal we have to take advantage of it," Mello said, "it's that type of business."
