The Polar Plunge at Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven attracted more than 300 participants this year despite bitter cold and wind.

Hundreds lined up at the water's edge just before 10am, with Fairhaven's Allen Days providing a count-down.

After the firing of a musket, there was a quick dash into the water for many, and an even quicker run back out to a waiting towel.

Retired educator Claudia Jacobson took the plunge dressed in a Superman outfit....

Jacobson said this was her fourth "Polar Plunge," and it's a great way to start the new year.

The event raises money for scholarships through the Fairhaven "Dollars for Scholars" program, and for domestic violence awareness.
