The bottom of Union Street in New Bedford is getting a new look.

Mayor Jon Mitchell says the street asphalt will be replaced with cobblestones, and wide patio style sidewalks will be installed for outdoor seating.

Funding for Union St. had been removed from the Route 18 project by the state, but after Route 18 came in under budget, Mayor Mitchell asked the state for additional funding to rebuild Union Street.

The $500,000 project will start next Wednesday, October 23rd, when the bottom of Union St. will be closed to traffic, while the city's contractor reconstructs the sidewalks and road.  That phase of the proejct is expected to take six to eight weeks.

New lights will also be installed and more trees planted as part of the project.
