A new dog park may be in the near future for New Bedford, and it could be sporting a familiar name.

The City Council requested a vacant lot across from the high school be transformed into a dog park and named after the late Jack Peterson Thursday night.

Ward 3 Councilor Henry Bousquet says building the park and honoring Peterson is a no brainer...

The fenced-in park would feature a key entry system, play areas, trash barrels, doggie bags, and benches. The motion also asks the city to create an account so donations can be made by the community to help fund the project.

A separate motion requested a softball field at Buttonwood Park be named after Captain Jack.

These motions are to be reviewed by the Parks Board and the Special Committee on Memorials and Dedications.
