City Man Treated For Accidental Gunshot Wound

New Bedford Police say a man accidentally shot himself in the leg on Thursday while cleaning his derringer.

Det. Capt. Steven Vicente says the incident happened around noon-time in the 300-block of Bedford Street. 

The 49 year old victim then called his neighbor who transported him to St. Lukes Hospital. 

He was later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital. 

Vicente says the wound was not life-threatening and the man was properly licensed to carry the weapon.  The victim's name and address was not released.
