A New Bedford man well known to city police decides to plead guilty to seven charges just a day after his Superior Court trial begins.

A spokesman for the District Attorney says 30 year old Marcell DePina entered his guilty pleas on Friday, admitting to unlawful possession of ammunition, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

The charges included a case in March, 2013 where Police say DePina kicked and punched his girlfriend and threw her into a car, where he continued to assault her till she was unconscious.

Judge E-Susan Garsh sentenced DePina to seven years and a day in state prison, plus four years probation following his release.
