A 25 year old New Bedford man was killed Tuesday afternoon when he apparently lost control of his motorcycle while heading north on Route 18.

The victim has been identified as 25 year old Kevin Pires of New Bedford.  Police say Pires was an Emergency Medical Technician who worked for both Eascare and Stat ambulance services.

Det. Captain Steve Vicente says the motorcycle operator apparently lost control on the s-curve north of Walnut Street around 1:45pm.

The bike struck some curbing and the operator was thrown from the bike.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Vicente says both the north and southbound lanes on the Kennedy Highway, from Union Street to Walnut St. were closed while police investigated.  Traffic was detoured from that area.
