City Council Takes Steps To Open Dialogue With Mayans
The New Bedford City Council wants to send a clear message to the city’s Mayan community that they are welcomed here, and the city will not tolerate any type of discrimination against anyone.
Mayan leaders have said their community has often been the victims of robbery and hate crimes
The City Council’s Committee on Public Safety approved a series of motions Monday night with the intention of making life somewhat easier for that population. Committee Chairman Brian Gomes…
The committee will ask the Dept. of Public Infrastructure to improve lighting along areas where mayans walk to and from work.
They also plan a meeting at St. Anthony’s Church, hoping to build a relationship between the Mayans, Police and city officials.
