The New Bedford City Council plans to go after drivers that don't stop for people crossing the street.

During Thursday night's meeting, the Council filed a motion asking for police to crack down on these drivers.

The police department has previously conducted sting operations to cite motorists that speed through crosswalks.

Ward One Councilor Jim Oliveira says this is simply a matter of safety.

Councilor at Large Brian Gomes explains to WBSM News how these sting operations work.

Along with possible sting operations, the Council is asking for more speed limit signs with flashing yellow lights.

The main focus was major intersections in the north end, but speeding has been an issue throughout the city.
