New Bedford could become the first city in Massachusetts to ban the use of Styrofoam. Councilor Henry Bousquet presented his motion to ban the products during Thursday night's City Council meeting.

He says they have a negative impact on our environment, and as a community who makes its living from the ocean, we should be more concerned with its health.

The towns of Somerville, Amherst, and Brookline have already banned the sale of Styrofoam products such as coffee cups and take-out containers.

The Ward 3 councilor is offering local business owners a chance to discuss the impacts this ban would have on them.

The motion has been referred to the Committee on Ordinances and will return to the council after further review and discussions.
