A citizens group involved in raising awareness about the contamination in the Parker Street Neighborhood several years ago is applauding a recent legal settlement between the City of New Bedford and two industrial companies.

The city will receive more than $8 million from AVX Corporation and Cornell Dubillier Electronics for pollution at the Parker Street Waste Site and the North Terminal Rail Yard.

Eddie Johnson of Clean tells WBSM News, the settlements are a good start. "We are extremely elated that settlements are now being reached, and there are other companies that will also have to pay up millions of dollars to clear themselves from the toxic contamination at the Parker Street site," said Johnson.

The legal action began during the Scott Lang administration when the city was sued by neighborhood residents because of contaminants on their property. The city then filed suit against the suspected polluters.  The city is continuing legal action against four other companies.
