NEW BEDFORD — A fire on Christmas morning has left three families in New Bedford without homes.

The New Bedford Fire Department says firefighters responded to reports of a fire at 470 Summer Street shortly after midnight on Christmas morning. Heavy flames could be seen coming from the third floor upon arrival.

While conducting a search and rescue inside the home, two firefighters fell through a hole in the floor. They were both quickly rescued.

All occupants of the home were able to escape. No injuries were reported. One cat perished after jumping out of the home to escape the fire.

Up to eight people who were living in the house have been displaced. The Red Cross is assisting several of the occupants.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
