NEW BEDFORD - Firefighters battled a structure fire at the site of the former Building #19 on Hathaway Road in New Bedford Friday morning. The fire was reported shortly after 8:30 a.m. in one of the remaining structures at 19 Hathaway Road.

The buildings on the premises are slated for demolition, with many of the structures already dismantled.

The fire was located between the roof structure and the insulation, and was brought under control in a matter of minutes.

Fire crews remained on the scene until 10 a.m., putting out any remaining hot spots.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News the vacant building may be attracting homeless people. "There may be some homeless people living in the building after hours and that could have been the cause," said Chief Gomes.

There is no running electricity in the building.

No injuries were reported.
