A historic whaling ship is back home in Mystic after a three-month journey along the southern coast of New England.

The Charles W. Morgan returned to Mystic Seaport Wednesday. It left the same port in May and visited New London, Newport, Martha's Vineyard, New Bedford and Boston. It reopens to the public on Saturday.

The Morgan is the last surviving ship from America's 19th century whaling fleet. It had not left Mystic since arriving there in 1941.

Officials said more than 64,000 visitors climbed aboard and visited dockside exhibitions during its 38th and final voyage. The trip was designed to raise awareness of the country's maritime heritage and promote ocean sustainability and conservation.

The museum restored the vessel over the past five years.
